Mea Culpa

Did you ever have the experience of knowing you accomplished some task and then discovering independent evidence completely refuting your memory? That happened to me last night when I learned that no Newsletter went out last Thursday or Friday. I spent a couple of hours (only in my memory, alas) putting together the Meeting news of the day that you so kindly provided. I won't chalk it up a "senior moment" but it sure was something to experience - not very pleasant I might add. So, here we are. Read on for the new news of the day. ~ Greg

Spiritual Reading Group

The next meeting of the Spiritual Reading group will be Sunday July 3 at 9 am at the Meeting House. If the weather is nice, we will meet outside. We are not planning zoom access for these summer groups. In September, we will start reading and discussing Michelle Martin's "Our Life is Love." If you are interested in joining the group then, which will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 9 am, plan on getting a copy of that book. If there is a need, we can make the group hybrid in September.

Wednesday Walkers

Faith Sillars and Kathy Urie are inviting you again for a walk on Wednesday, July 6th at 9:30 am.

The trail we chose is (Marjorie) Swope Loop (blue) trail, west of Concord. The trail head is on Long Pond Road, near Penacook Lake. The trail is a loop but we will also hike up to the top of Jerry Hill, some 200 ft elevation. Reviews of this walk say it is easy with a few rocks in the path. Some suggested the use of walking sticks. Kathy will bring hers and extras. As always wear comfortable shoes for walking, bring water bottles, sprays, snacks, etc. An hour and 15 minutes should do it.

Directions from Concord:

Start on rt 3 (North State Street), in what is referred to as West Concord area. Turn onto Hutchins Street off rt 3. You will then be heading west. (A West Congregational Church is on the corner.) Hutchins Street becomes Lake View Drive. Watch for and make a right on to Long Pond Road. Before you know it, you will see the trailhead on your right.

Please let Faith and Kathy know that you will be doing this walk.

Some Ukrainian History Reference Material

Kathi C writes: International Friends attending the Daily Worship for Peace hosted by Friends House Moscow have compiled a short list of resources providing context for the current conflict in the Ukraine. This includes a link to a lecture video. The list can be found here.

News From Around AFSC

Human Migration and Mobility

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee recently attached and passed the Newhouse amendment on Title 42 to the FY2023 DHS Appropriations Bill. If passed, it would keep Title 42 restrictions on immigration in place until 6 months after the COVID pandemic national emergency declaration officially ends. If you haven't already, contact President Biden and Congress today.

Economic Justice

In the coming month, the U.S. Supreme Court will announce its ruling in West Virginia v. EPA—a case that could undermine the federal government's very ability to fight the climate crisis. If you haven’t already, contact Congress today.

AFSC responds to Roe v. Wade

On June 24 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating federal protection of reproductive rights. Read AFSC's full statement here and sign the petition to enact federal abortion protections.

Asylum Seekers' Support Fund

So far $2,160 has been contributed toward the goal of $4,000. For more information see the flyer here. It can be easily downloaded and sent on to others. You may be interested to know that most of the contributions have come from outside Concord Meeting. Please consider helping us reach our goal.

The following items have appeared previously in the Newsletter.

Towels

Kathi Connors writes that the Resource Center of Concord Coalition to End Homelessness offers unhoused persons the use of their showers. They try to provide a clean towel and washcloth to each person, to be placed in a basket after use to be laundered. They are in dire need of these items right now to the point that several persons went without towels during last Fridays drop-in hours. I am collecting towels and washcloths to donate to them, and am willing to pick them up from donors. Please, no bath sheets or hand towels. Contact me by email, please, if you have a donation. If you don't have Kathi's email you can reply to WebClerk [at] concordfriendsmeeting [dot] org.
